Invoice or estimate — know which you are sending

An estimate is what you send before the work to win it. An invoice is what you send after, to get paid. They look similar and share most fields, but an invoice needs a unique invoice number, the date the work was completed, and clear payment instructions. Sending an invoice that reads like an estimate is a common reason people pay late — they think it is still a proposal.

Charge the call-out, and say so up front

The drive, the parking and the first look are real costs, and handymen absorb them more than any other trade. Put the call-out on the invoice as its own line and mention it when the customer books. Almost nobody objects to a call-out fee they were told about; almost everybody objects to one that appears at the end.

Get paid before you leave

For jobs under a few hundred dollars, the cheapest collection method is asking while you are still standing there. Have the invoice ready on your phone, show the total, take payment on the spot. Every day an invoice sits unsent is a day it might not get paid at all.
