Price the job, not the hour

Customers compare hourly rates and nothing else, which is a race you lose to whoever is most desperate. Break the job into outcomes — 'supply and fit', 'make good and clean' — and put a price against each. The total can be identical, but the customer is now comparing what they get rather than what you charge per hour.

Build in the things you always forget

Disposal, parking, permits, the second trip for a part, and the hour you spend writing the estimate itself. Most small contractors quote the visible work and absorb the rest, which is where a job that looked profitable quietly stops being one. Put them on the estimate as lines, even at zero, so the customer can see what is included.

Send it the same day

The single biggest predictor of winning a job is being first with a written number. Customers rarely wait for the third quote if the first one is clear, professional and arrives while the problem is still on their mind. Speed beats polish here more often than tradespeople expect.
