Say who patches the wall

You cut a hole to reach the pipe. The customer assumes putting it back is included. Unless you have quoted drywall repair and paint, it is not — and this is one of the most reliable sources of bad feeling in plumbing work. One line on the estimate settles it while everyone is still friendly.

Quote the diagnosis separately from the fix

You cannot price a repair you have not diagnosed. Charge for the call-out and diagnosis as its own line, then quote the fix once you know what it is. Customers accept this readily when it is stated up front, and it stops you giving away the expertise that is the actual value you provide.

Flag what you cannot see

Old galvanised supply, corroded shut-offs, non-compliant venting — all invisible until you open the wall. Note on the estimate that further issues will be quoted before you proceed. That sentence is what turns an unwelcome surprise into an expected process.
